Discover with us the amazing world of wine

Contrary to common opinion, Poland is a country that has centuries-old wine traditions. After the advent of Christianity, wine in Poland became a liquor indispensable for liturgical purposes ... and importing it from the south of Europe was a big problem. This situation caused that the first vineyards were founded, and the Benedictines and Cistercians are considered the precursors of wine-making in our country. An interesting look of the history of winemaking developing in the area of Zielona Góra, where in the year 1150, settlers from Flanders settled in these areas. The first documented references to Zielona Góra vineyards date back to 1314.

Polish viticulture was developing by leaps and bounds - the first major jump was in the fourteenth century, when viticulture was no longer so dependent on liturgical needs and the vineyards were founded or rented by the townspeople. Wine has become a commercial good - an exchangeable commodity or a means of payment.

Good times of Polish viticulture lasted until the seventeenth century, where the climatic conditions deteriorated considerably (a small ice age came), having a direct impact on the state of the vines. Later it was only worse - in the nineteenth century the phylloxera plague decimating vineyards throughout Europe, whether the turmoil associated with the First and Second World Wars meant that the vineyards for some time were forgotten. In the 80s of the twentieth century, Polish viticulture is beginning to revive again, and the last decade is a veritable explosion of vineyards. As of today, it is estimated that there are about 300 vineyards in Poland.

For several years, Polish viticulture has ceased to take the form of crazy fun of several dozen enthusiasts filmed for wine. The vineyards are becoming more and more professional so that the quality of wines produced by them absolutely does not stick out from those of German or Austrian. Due to such an interesting history of this drink - we hoteliers from the Villa of the Discoveries - we feel the need to spread knowledge about wine. We want the wine to be "ubiquitous" and thus the climate we have filled every corner of our hotel - starting with the names of rooms referring to grape varieties, through the colors referring to specific wines, to numerous small details deeply embedded in the wine world. We try to propagate wine culture in all possible ways but without pathos and artificial inflating. We strongly believe that a loose approach to this topic will make wine win many a supporter.
